Clicker Training
My information on Clicker Training – LeAnne
I began riding mid-life. These large animals were such a draw for me. I could see their beauty and their willingness to be with me, yet my frustration was building. I had a strong drive to be with my horse, combined with an overwhelming sense of helplessness: How do I bridge the gap between us? How can I communicate with this great horse? About a year later a friend recommended clicker training. This has given my horses and me a way to bridge the gap.
Thank goodness I finally heard this. Not only am I happier, my horses are happier, too, since they really enjoy getting a treat for appropriate behavior and they know hearing that click means the correct answer/behavior. Building positive behaviors for my horses is much more pleasant now. Positive rewards for their satisfaction are a big deal for them and me. I feel good inside by using clicker training.
Clicker Training Clinics
All the horses here at Wind Haven are being clicker trained. Therefore, we attend as many clicker clinics with Alexandra Kurland as we can to further continue our education in applying our best training strategies.
We introduce clicker training to the rescue horses when they arrive, concentrating on their special needs such as fears of people, fears of saddles, taking a bit, lifting their feet for the farrier, having their ears and head touched, and any other basic training that needs to be developed to make a horse safe to enter an adoptable home.
LeAnne uses clicker training with her personal horses to gain soft rope handling skills to become as gentle and clear as she can be for one of her very sensitive horses. Attending these clinics as often as possible keeps all the information we need to communicate with the horses updated.
We are very fortunate that Alexandra Kurland comes right here to Toutle, WA three times a year to give Advanced Clicker training Seminars. The Seminars are hosted by Debra Olson Daniels at The Magic Center in Toutle,WA . Debra has studied with Ms. Kurland since late 2001 and teaches her work through Beginning ,and Intermediate Clicker Training Seminars and Private Lessons. More information can be found on her web site www.equineclickermagic.com. Anyone interested in volunteering at Wind Haven Horse Rescue can sign up with Debra to take beginning clicker training classes. The more you know about clicker training, the more interaction you can have with the horses.
